What's a Wii Mod Chip For?
Public Comments
- The purpose of a Wii Mod Chip is to be able to play burned games. People who install a mod chip basically solder in an additional chip which allows your Wii to play pirated games. People who use a mod chip usually rent a game from a video store, make a copy of the game with their computer, and then return the game. Basically, they just got a $50 for about $5. Also, there are mod chips out there that claim you can play different region games (JAP games on US system) as well as DVDs. The negatives to the mod chip is that Nintendo is programming their updates so they cannot be used when you have mod chip. This was proven during the most last recent update when Nintendo said that if you have an unauthorized modification to your Wii, that it may not work any longer after the download and installation of the new update.
- Invalidating you warranty and preventing from updating your wii.
- While the first perrson that answered is partially true I would say that it is very presumptuous to say that modders are only people that rent games, copy them, and return the original to the video store. I believe there are many like that. BUT, the mod chip is used by people like myself who have small children that love video games. Daddy cries when he pays $60 for a game only to have his little boy accidentally scratch it beyond playability. Backing up the game and letting him play till his heart is content is a wonderful option for me. He wrecks the game, I fire off another backup. Original sits high up on shelf and stays in perfect condition. I'm not a game trader as I don't like getting $5-$8 back on my $60 investment so I will always have the original in my possession. I don't want to turn this into a morality war I just want you to remember there are some that view the modchip as an investment to protect their purchases. Another large group of people out there also mod their systems as they want to play import games as well. Many of the systems that are out there will only play games from the region they live in. A modchip can help bypass the region detection and help those play games from across the world. That is a huge benefit to those that like to keep up with certain games that may never get a release in their part of the world.
