WII - Japanese Console with Mod Chip?

I inherited a WII console from China - it has the Japanese Menu. I know its modded because it plays burned games. I need some simple answers: 1) How do I tell which mod chip is in my unit without opening it? Can I safely assume its one, kind? If so which one is it likely to be. 2)Is it safe to connect to the internet? To my knowledge, it never has been. I've heard about automatic updates making the WII unusable. Since all the menus are Japanese, I don't know what is going on. Can someone please explain.

  1. Is it possible to change the language of the wii back to English so you can easily understand what the wii menu is saying? Try going to Wii settings>language to see if you have this option. If not, the most common modchip people have is the wiikey so it's likely thats the one you have. I think it doesn't matter which modchip it is, they could all play burned games. It should be safe to connect to the internet. I've performed wii updates several times with no problems at all. My friend does it all the time and he has a modded wii too. Some games, such as Mario Strikers, require a wii update or else the game will not work. So yes, connecting to the internet should be fine.
