Can you make copies of Nintendo Wii games and will they still work in the console?

My 3yr old son has managed to badly scratch the Nintendo Wii Sports game and I would like to copy it (and the other games we have) just to make sure that we have a a back up. Can this be done? Is it legal? Do I need to buy specific type of disc to copy them on to?

  1. I dont think its legal, But i have heard that it is possible to copy a nintendo Wii game and play it without modifying the Nintendo Wii. You just need to buy a certain CD Burner...i forget which one. Just do a search on google and yahoo and there is software that you can use also....Good Luck!
  2. You need to install a mod chip like the wiikey before you can do that
  3. No, you really can't unless you "mod" your console, which I do not recommend doing. "Modding" your console means you open your console and solder in a special chip which "tricks" the console into thinking your backup copies are the original disks. As far as copying your disks go? There are certain procedures you have to follow for it to work and they're somewhat complicated. Here's a forum with step-by-step instructions: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/471073 In the U.S., it is only legal to back-up copies of titles you legitimately purchased and own. It is not legal to make backups to give to friends and others, or to make backups of titles you rented or downloaded off shareware sites on the internet. That's considered "piracy" and a violation of copyright laws. If you decide to "mod" your console, you will automatically void your warranty and run the risk of "frying" your console. You also run the risk of having your console "bricked", meaning that it may not be compatable with future updates for your console, which may cause it to stop working. I would like the ability to make backups for my titles as well, but feel the risks outweigh the benefits. Plus frankly, there's just too many "hoops" to jump through to do it, that I wouldn't invest my time or money in.
  4. yes u can copy them but they wont work on your console unless its chipped. They used to chip consoles by soldering a specific chip inside the console itself, but a friend of mine has just had her wii chipped and it was done by software. they put a disc in and download info to the console and then its able to read copied discs. And i think it would need to be a data disc not a cd type
  5. It's Illegal, but it is possible, you need to put a mod chip into the Wii, and then you just copy it like you would copy a CD. With the mod chip, It'll work.
