Wii Help

What is the simplest way to mod a wii to play dvds?

I don't care about playing backups, emulators or anything else, it's just that the dvd player is the only reason I haven't traded my xbox 360 for a wii. There are plenty of people out there who offer these types of services, but which way should I go? Hard mod, soft mod, what is the best method for dvd action?

  1. You can't mod it to play DVDs. Unless you know a genius electrical engineer.
  2. It's possible, but risky A lot of people say that the Wii's DVD drive wasn't built to be spinning all the time nor was the laser designed to be reading information nonstop (both of which you need to have happen if you're reading a DVD movie). Hence, at best you might find yourself with choppy video and out-of-sync audio, and at worst you might find yourself with a dead Wii. If you already have the Homebrew Channel, you can try DVDX which will get the job done -- i.e. play DVD movies on your Wii. http://hackmii.com/2008/08/libdi-and-the-dvdx-installer/ My honest advice to anybody on this is not to risk screwing up their Wii, with standalone DVD players being so cheap these days it makes much more economical sense to buy one off-the-shelf rather than to carry out modifications that could potentially damage your console.
